With the dark nights drawing in and temperatures dropping, it’s time to make the borough a little more festive with Christmas just around the corner.

The Council has chosen its main Christmas trees that will be erected in St. James’ Square, Riverhead Square and at Grimsby Community Recycling Centre (CRC) in the coming weeks.

A 23ft and a 12ft Nordmann Fir have been hand picked from Strawson Woodland at Little Cawthorpe near Louth thanks to a generous donation from Newlincs Development Ltd, North East Lincolnshire’s waste management contractor.

The 23ft tree will be erected in St. James’ Square whilst the 12ft Fir will be placed at Grimsby CRC.

Newlincs operate the community recycling centres in Grimsby and Immingham, and the energy from waste plant in Stallingborough.

Additionally, to mark the first Christmas with the new look Riverhead Square, there will be a 40ft Christmas tree erected in the centre of the square. The Norway Spruce has been handpicked by the Council from Real Christmas Trees in Birmingham.

Lights will be installed on the St James’s Square tree before they’re turned on around 5.45pm during the Great Grimsby Christmas Festival on Saturday, 23 November. Taking place across St James Square, Riverhead Square, Grimsby Minster, Freshney Place and Victoria Street, this year’s festival promises to be bigger and better than ever.

From midday until 7pm, families and residents can enjoy a packed programme of events designed to celebrate the festive season in style which includes:

  • Main Stage: Experience live   performances from local bands and solo artists, bringing festive cheer with classic and contemporary Christmas hits

  • Festive Market: Explore a wide range of stalls selling gifts, artisan crafts, and seasonal food and drinks—perfect for Christmas shopping or sampling local treats

  • Curling Fun: Try your hand at winter curling on the pop-up Curling Lane—a perfect activity for some friendly, festive competition

  • Choir Performances & DJ Workshops: Enjoy the sounds of local choirs performing Christmas carols and festive DJ workshops, where you can learn to mix your own holiday beats

Portfolio Holder for Culture, Heritage and Visitor Economy, Councillor Hayden Dawkins, said: “It’s brilliant to see Christmas coming to North East Lincolnshire.

“This is a time for us to all get together across the borough and celebrate the festive period. We’re extremely grateful to Newlincs for their donation and Strawsons for helping us to get a Christmas tree that does Grimsby justice.”
