Industry taster day inspires next generation of workers

Students took part in a special ‘Intro to Industry’ day hosted by local training provider CATCH, where they explored practical skills, toured facilities and learned more about the growing career opportunities available on their doorstep.

Held at CATCH’s training centre in Stallingborough, the event brought together five students selected through schools and support services across the area, including young people who are home educated or previously in care.

Designed to inspire the next generation of workers, the day combined hands-on activities with employability support, helping students build confidence in interview skills, job applications and career pathways into industry.

Those taking part said the day had opened their eyes to new opportunities, including Macie: “I am enjoying the day - lots of what I have learnt is completely new, and I would like to go on and become a wind turbine technician,” she said.

Another student, Jack, added: “I really enjoyed the practical elements of the day, and I’m really interested in applying for an apprenticeship in future.”

CATCH is a nationally recognised, industry-led training centre supporting skills development across the energy, process engineering and industrial sectors. The organisation continues to invest in modern training facilities and works closely with employers and industry partners to help prepare young people for future careers.

Speaking following the taster day, Mark Booth, Head of Skills and Site Operations at CATCH, said: “Days like today are important to give young people practical experience of industry and help them understand the skills needed for the future of clean energy and the UK’s energy security.”

Councillor Samuel Grice, Deputy Leader of North East Lincolnshire Council and Portfolio Holder for Children and Education, further highlighted the importance of the training day and the ongoing partnership with local skills providers: “Supporting young people to reach their full potential is key to the long-term success of our borough. We know there is strong demand for skilled workers, and by continuing to work closely with organisations like CATCH, we can help equip our future workforce with the skills they need to succeed here in North East Lincolnshire.

“We’re committed to ensuring people of all ages have access to clear, high-quality pathways into meaningful employment. When our residents do well, it not only strengthens our communities but boosts our local economy, too.”

The day was funded through the Regional Skills Pilot Scheme, backed by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). The project is supported by £3 million of grant funding awarded across the UK to help progress net zero ambitions.
