PlayZone brings new sports opportunities for East marsh residents

Two new state-of-the-art 2G pitches are bringing new opportunities to East Marsh residents.

 

The new ‘PlayZone’ multi-use games area (MUGA) on Kent Street will give the community the chance to play a range of sports including football, futsal, hockey and netball with two pitches, each approximately 30 by 20 metres, coupled with in built goals and line markings. 

Run by YMCA Humber, who purchased the area from the Council in August 2023, the reimagined site will focus on community access, with an online booking system with a number allocated free to use sessions. The PlayZone will also offer the opportunity for more formal sessions to be held, where groups can book for a small fee.

 

 

Opened by Mayor Janet Goodwin, it’s hoped the facility will be an asset to the local community for years to come. She said: “I think this is simply amazing.

“There are plenty of opportunities for residents to get up and get active playing any number of sports here. I would also like to thank the YMCA for all their hard work in making this place a reality, I’m sure they’ll do a brilliant job of making sure everyone gets the most out of it.”

She added: “Having this as well as the MUGA in Grant Thorold Park is great for the whole of the borough. There are an abundance of opportunities for adults and children across the area, no matter where you live.”

Kate Conway, YMCA Humber Chief Executive, said: “The opening of the new PlayZone at Kent Street is a fantastic milestone for YMCA Humber. It will provide a safe and vibrant space where people of all ages can come together, be active, and enjoy themselves. We are proud of what’s been achieved and excited for what comes next.”

Also in attendance was Councillor Hayden Dawkins, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Heritage and the Visitor Economy, who was thrilled to help celebrate such an impressive community asset.

“As a Council, we are dedicated to giving residents of all ages a chance to be active and try something new. We’re proud to have partnered with the YMCA in making this happen and I’ve no doubt it will be a huge success going forward.”
