The Father became an Oscar-winning movie in 2020 starring Sir Anthony Hopkins as André and Olivia Colman as his daughter Anne.
Now 80 years old, André's declining mental faculties lead to confusion, frustration and a loss of identity. His daughter Anne struggles to balance her love for her father and the need to care for him with the pressures of her own work and personal life.
The play is notable for its inventive dramatic form, which mirrors André's increasing mental confusion by playing with our expectations of space and time. The audience is forced to see life through André’s eyes and to experience the dislocation, anxiety and vulnerability associated with his dementia.
The Father is a moving family portrait and a tragi-comic mystery, by turns funny, absurd and heartbreaking.
Common Ground’s latest production stars Jerry Smith as André and Laura Turner as Anne and features a strong supporting cast of company regulars and newcomers.
The Father can be seen at the Broadbent Theatre in Wickenby from Thursday 10th until Saturday 12th April 2025. Performances begin at 7.30pm.
Tickets cost £13 (£12 concessions) and can be purchased online at https://broadbenttheatre.org/events/the-father/. Or you can call the box office on 0333 666 3366. Some tickets may also be available on the door.
Common Ground Theatre Company will celebrate its 25th anniversary next yar and The Father will be its 41st production.
Past shows have included modern classics such as Waiting for Godot and No Exit, Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar and Romeo and Juliet, and period costume drama including Little Women and Carry On, Jeeves!
