The 3000 acre estate, which has served as the ancestral seat of the de Eresby family for over five centuries, lends itself to the latest installment of the Netflix sensation. Production crews captured the castle's architectural splendor during overnight shoots in Autumn 2022.
At the heart of the scenes filmed there lies the magnificent Vanbrugh Hall, a jewel in Grimsthorpe Castle's crown. The Hall takes centre stage in the unfolding drama, acting as the backdrop for lead characters’ scenes. The stunning frontage was also used, providing the backdrop for carriage arrivals and departures, further helping to bring the world of Bridgerton to life.
Lucie VonCarthy, Grimsthorpe Castle's Public Access Lead, shared her experience, saying, "It was so exciting to see the Castle undergo its transformation into a film set. Collaborating with the production team, we undertook extensive measures to safeguard the Castle's centuries-old heritage while integrating the lavish spectacle that is Bridgerton."
VonCarthy elaborates on the efforts undertaken, saying, "One of our biggest concerns was preserving the floor of the Vanbrugh Hall; we couldn't risk the wear and tear that 200 actors and heavy filming equipment could bring to it. To address this challenge, the production crew created a replica floor to lay over the original! They made this using plyboard and MDF which was then covered with vinyl flooring printed with the exact intricate design of the original stone floor. We couldn’t believe how true to life the finished article looked- it really was incredible. The whole team here at Grimsthorpe are so excited to see the scenes the castle features in.”
As Season 3 of Bridgerton captivate audiences worldwide, Grimsthorpe Castle invites visitors to experience one of its locations firsthand. The Castle welcomes visitors on selected days from March to October, offering a glimpse into centuries of history and architecture.
