More than 120 people turned up to celebrate our green spaces with children taking part in bug hunts, pond dipping and butterfly counts as part of Love Parks Week 2025.

Free events took place across North East Lincolnshire parks, hosted by the new Coastal Ranger, Josh Forrester, who is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Love Parks Week is a national initiative that takes place every year and is organised by  Keep Britain Tidy to celebrate the importance of our green spaces.

The events not only showcased what is available in our parks for children and families, but also highlighted the environmental value of these local landmarks.

Children were able to capture insects in nets and investigate them close-up under a microscope. They included everything from caterpillars to crickets, and Josh and a team of NELC ecologists then gave the children a lesson in how and why these insects are so important to our environment.

Josh said: “The success of these events wouldn't have been possible without the support of the local people who attended.

“The weather held up and our parks were the perfect place to begin the school holidays outdoors. Hopefully we've enthused people about the wildlife that can be readily found on their doorsteps and maybe even encouraged some young wildlife rangers along the way.”

Cllr Henry Hudson, NELC Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said:

“We are so lucky to have so much natural beauty on our doorstep here in North East Lincolnshire. It is not just the wonderful beach and the nature reserve, but also the many fabulous parks that provide outdoor spaces for everyone to enjoy.

“Thank you to everyone who came along to celebrate our parks. Promoting the benefits of being outdoors, both mentally and physically, is so important, and with such great weather this summer we hope that many more families will take to our parks during the remainder of the summer holidays.”
