Artwork celebrating all things North East Lincolnshire lights up town centre

Collectively titled A Place for Light, the three structures cover three main themes, including industry, the sea and the Wolds.

Surrounded by seasonal plants and benches for people to sit and enjoy their day, this trio of structures adds yet another pocket of regeneration to a town centre that is quickly being reimagined.

Designed by Stephanie Ledgerwood, Head of Professional Services at the Council and successful artist, the trio of cylinders is a way of blending the past and present, showing what’s to come without forgetting how we got here.

The three pieces are titled separately and contain different images. When light is shone through the small holes, it reveals a larger landscape of the key elements that make up North East Lincolnshire:

• Celebration of Industry – Depicting several offshore wind turbines, this piece showcases the future of our area and the Council’s passion for achieving Net Zero.
• Relationship with the Sea – this structure celebrates the town’s former fishing industry, whilst also giving a nod to the wonderful Cleethorpes Pier.
• Embracing the Wolds – Not forgetting some of the amazing elements on land, the design of the piece includes Waltham Windmill, the Wolds themselves and some of the animals that call it their home

Speaking about her creations, Steph said: “The inspiration around this is celebrating North East Lincolnshire.

“The first is about the Wolds and how that links to the coast, which is the second sculpture; looking at our former fishing industry. The third sculpture looks at how that industry has changed, depicting the offshore wind farms.”

She added: “It’s been wonderful from start to finish. We’ve had such a great group of local people and businesses helping us along the way and it’s the first time I’ve been able to do something of this scale as an artist.

“I’m hoping that people will embrace this little pocket of space that we’ve developed. It will help bring people to the town centre; the lighting will make people feel safer and it’ll provide a place for people to sit and take a moment before carrying on with their shopping.”

The art installation has been funded through the Greening Up Our Town Centre initiative, funded by the High Street Accelerator Fund which aims to help communities and councils join up on long-term regeneration.
