After more than a decade spent chairing North East Lincolnshire Council’s Audit and Governance Committee, Tim Render last week stepped down to enjoy his retirement.

Tim has held the position of Independent Chair of the Committee since 2010, previously holding senior roles in finance at a number of different local authorities including Birmingham City Council, Coventry City Council, and Nottingham City Council.

The role of independent chair, which is vitally important to the running of a successful local authority, is to provide an independent and high-level focus on the risk and governance of the Council.

At his final Committee meeting, last week, Tim was presented with a Civic Award by The Worshipful The Mayor of the Borough of North East Lincolnshire, Councillor Janet Goodwin, in recognition of his service.

Speaking at the meeting, North East Lincolnshire Council’s portfolio holder for finance, resources and assets, Councillor Stephen Harness, said:

“The Audit and Governance Committee is absolutely crucial to a Council, making sure that we stay in the lines and operate in a legal and rational way.

“During the 15-years that he has audited our work, Tim has shown great commitment to the people of North East Lincolnshire, and he will be missed.

“On behalf of the Committee, and on behalf of North East Lincolnshire Council officers, I wish you a long and happy retirement.”

After receiving his Civic Award, Tim thanked those in attendance, and said he’d enjoyed Chairing the Committee:

“I think, when an organisation is well-run, it makes the audit task easy. We’ve had good relations with officers, and some have really liked coming to the audit committee to talk about their work.

“I’ve been really grateful for the support of members whilst they’ve been here, and the support of a whole range of officers. Thank you very much for your support. I will try to be properly retired now!”
