City of Lincoln Council is proud to announce a commemorative public event marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, to be held on Thursday 8 May 2025 at Castle Hill, Lincoln.

The celebration will honour the end of the Second World War in Europe on 8th May 1945 and marks the day the Allies formally accepted Germany’s surrender. This historic milestone will pay tribute to bravery of all those who served during in World War II and fought for the freedom we enjoy today.

The celebrations are part of a national programme of events inspired by the UK’s Pageantmaster, Bruno Peek, who has been involved in the planning of a nationwide singalong and beacon lighting ceremonies.

This shared moment of celebration will unite communities across the country and pay tribute to those who served and sacrificed for peace.

The day will begin at 9am with the ceremonial raising of the VE Day flag at Lincoln’s historic Guildhall, attended by military representatives, the Mayor of Lincoln and Civic Party.

This is a national event, and the special flag will be raised by all cities throughout the country.

Here in Lincoln, Melvyn Prior, a former BBC Lincolnshire presenter, will read the Proclamation from the Guildhall at 9am as the flag is raised.

Festivities in Castle Hill will commence from 4:30pm, with BBC Radio Lincolnshire hosting the event and the civic party and dignitaries in attendance.

As a result, there will be road closures in place on Dury Lane and Steep Hill and Castle Hill car park will also be closed to the public on the day of the event.

Visitors can look forward to live musical entertainment from 1940s-style singers, and music from a DJ, and will also have the opportunity to explore displays by the Royal Air Force, Royal Logistic Corp from Sobraon Barracks, and Vintage Military Vehicles, amongst several other military charities with stalls.

A special Choral Evensong will take place at Lincoln Cathedral at 5:30pm, followed by the ringing of the bells across the city at 6:30pm.

The evening will end with a moving and symbolic moment as the Dean of Lincoln reads the Tribute prior to a beacon being lit atop the Castle Walls at 9:30pm, joining communities across the nation in remembrance and celebration.

Kate Fenn, Civic & International Partnerships Manager and Event Manager for the celebration, said:

“This is a meaningful day for the city, and we look forward to welcoming residents and visitors alike to come together to mark this significant moment in history.”
