This Holocaust Memorial Day on Monday, January 27, marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp complex, and the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.

Eighty years on and antisemitism has increased significantly the UK, many communities feel vulnerable, and prejudice, hatred, intolerance and hostility are ever-present and prevalent in daily life.

You can stand against such prejudice and hatred today, and remember those who were murdered for who they were throughout history by lighting a candle at 8pm to join in a national moment for Holocaust Memorial Day.

The placing of lit or battery candles and lighting of buildings in purple are actions promoted by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust as part of its mission to raise awareness of historic and more recent genocides, remember the millions of lives lost, reflect on prejudices that prevail, and recommit to actions against discrimination, racism and hatred.

North Kesteven District Council will place (battery) candles in windows across its buildings, tourism and leisure venues and will light the Handley Monument in Sleaford purple on the night.

Shine your light by sharing a photo and joining the conversation on social media. #HolocaustMemorialDay #LightTheDarkness.

There is also an extensive schedule of programmes across BBC channels, TV, radio and online.
