“I wouldn’t be where I am now without you”: the support service transforming lives of local young people

As part of North East Lincolnshire Council, YPSS provides one-to-one support and help with post-16 applications to targeted students in year 11 as well as employability guidance for young people not in employment, education or training in years 12 and 13, extending up to age 25 for those with additional needs or 21 with care experience. With results day this month, the service is proving especially vital for those navigating their next steps after school.

From supported visits to local education providers to tailored coaching from experienced practitioners, YPSS ensures no young person feels left behind. That commitment is reflected in the words of Colby, who credits the service with helping him build confidence and direction: “When I was helpless, you helped me find a job and make a career when I had no idea what I was doing. You gave me the confidence to try more than one path and now I’m more sociable - you’ve brought me out of my shell.”

Parents have also praised the support they have received. Helen, whose daughter worked with YPSS, shared: “We were supported as a family, which gave us confidence and a sense of direction. I don’t think we would have known what to do at that important stage, as it can be so easy to slip off the radar. I would recommend YPSS to everyone whose child is leaving school.”

Beth’s journey is another example of the service’s transformative impact. Following a bereavement and a period of home education, Beth was anxious and struggling to communicate. After connecting with YPSS practitioner Marie, she received support with a neurodiversity referral and regular home visits. Since then, Beth has since auditioned for a Performing Arts course at the Grimsby Institute and is waiting to start in September.

After working closely with Beth, Marie said: “I am so proud of her. She has come on so much and has really helped herself too. Her parents have both told me how much they’ve noticed the change in her and how much they appreciate what I’ve done to play a part in this.”

Hayley Gilham, Operational Manager of YPSS, reflected on the feedback: “At YPSS we pride ourselves on putting young people at the heart of everything we do, so it’s wonderful to hear directly from young people and their families about the impact our work has had.”

Councillor Margaret Cracknell, Portfolio Holder for Children, Education and Families, added: "It’s incredibly encouraging to hear how the dedication and compassion of the Young People’s Support Service team are making a real difference in the lives of young people and their families across North East Lincolnshire. Our young people are the future of our borough, and it’s vital that we empower them with the confidence and skills they need to thrive in education, employment, and beyond.
