A Grimsby school is brightening up the town centre with their vibrant designs.

Littlecoates Primary Academy have been designing a range of signs to welcome visitors to Victoria Street in Grimsby town centre.

The school’s art club have been working on four different images to be used on signs at the main entrances. The project is in conjunction with the work carried out by the gardening Club and Grimsby in Bloom who have carried out a range of planting along the street.

Designs include iconic Grimsby landmarks such as the Dock Tower as well as welcoming messages to make everyone feel safe when shopping in the town.

Teacher Emma Bradley, who runs the Art Club, said: “We have been looking at what makes Grimsby special to us, based on what the children have seen around Grimsby like murals and other paintings.

“Additionally, we’ve looked at the Dock Tower, the Fishing Heritage Centre and the environment that surrounds the area. They’ve used those ideas to create the first of the four designs.”

The first sign will incorporate fishing vessels, the Dock Tower and a Seagull drawn by Year 5 pupil Betsy.

“I created Sammy the Seagull who is a silly, clumsy character and will sit next to all the other aspects,” said Betsy.

Emma added: “In the coming posters we’re going to look at doing something in relation to the history of Victoria Street and how it’s changed over the years, including one from 1908.

“There were a number of carts and other items in the Bullring area and they want to use all of that going forward. They’ve come up with some really great ideas and they should be really proud of what they’ve created.”

The project is part of the Green Spaces grant programme which aims to beautify the area through a range of different initiatives.

Councillor Ron Shepherd, Portfolio Holder for Safer and Stronger Communities, added: “I think this is an amazing way to improve the town centre.

“We are always looking to inspire the younger generation in North East Lincolnshire and I’m sure these students will create a beautiful new look to Victoria Street.

“However, this is just one aspect of what the Council are planning for Grimsby town centre. We have completed the Riverhead Centre and the redevelopment of Freshney Place is well underway as we look to provide a new and vibrant Grimsby for residents and visitors to enjoy.”
