The Government have temporarily banned the sale and use of disposable BBQs following fears they pose a risk to the public during the prolonged hot weather period.

Retailers are asked to remove the items from shelves and prevent further sales to reduce the possibility of more wildfires across the UK. Additionally, residents are urged not to use the items as they have been the cause of numerous fires over the Summer months.

During the current drought and heatwave conditions, the Government’s view is that they could be a “significant risk to the public and the environment” so are currently not deemed to be a safe product.

The call to remove them from shelves is based on the duty for distributors to ensure that only safe products are on the market. Those found not to be compliant with the change may be subject to sanctions under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 (GPSR).

If you are aware of anyone continuing to sell these products then please email the Trading Standards team at ENV-TradingStandards@nelincs.gov.uk who will take the appropriate action.
