North East Lincolnshire Council’s CCTV has aided in 21 offenders being sanctioned and two being sentenced, a recent study shows.

Installed in 2022, the £2.25 million system has been used to support emergency services in various incidents across the borough.

In some cases, the footage is used as evidence in investigations by Humberside Police which may result in an individual receiving a sanction. This includes someone being charged with a crime or given a Community Resolution. The latest report, from April to September 2024, shows a total of 21 sanctions being issued for a variation of crimes:

  • Arson and criminal damage - 1

  • Burglary - 3

  • Possession of weapon - 3

  • Public order offences - 2

  • Theft - 1

  • Vehicle offences - 2

  • Violence against the person – 9

The majority of these crimes resulted in charges being given (13) with the majority coming in August (5). The work of the CCTV system is an integral part of the partnership working that is being used to make North East Lincolnshire a safe and secure place to live and work.

In Grimsby town centre alone, crime reduced by 11% in 2024 thanks to initiatives like  Safer Streets 5, Operation Mastery and planned monthly Days of Action both supported by the CCTV system.

2025 has already proven why the system is so valuable to keeping our area safe. On two occasions, footage from the cameras has been used as evidence to help obtain a sentencing for offenders.

In one case, related to harassment charges, the individual was given a 16 week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months and ordered to pay £187.00 in costs.

Another, involving a multitude of driving offences, resulted in the person having to pay £85 in costs; a £48 as a surcharge for victim support; a £120 fine as well as being disqualified from driving for 16 months.

Councillor Ron Shepherd, Portfolio Holder for Safer and Stronger Communities, said: “Instances like these show why the CCTV system is a vital element in our campaign to make the borough a safer area.

“Our Council operates a zero tolerance policy and these cameras are just one strand of that aim. We will continue to reprimand those who do not obey the law and work with our partners to ensure the necessary actions are taken.”

Grimsby Town Neighbourhood Policing Inspector, Claire Jacobs said: “The CCTV operators and support team play a crucial role in our continued efforts towards making the town a place where people feel safe and supported."

“Having their skills and expertise to assist in detecting crime and providing vital evidence, whilst also safeguarding the community and working closely with officers, these results highlight the positive impact the system is having on reducing crime and improving safety in the community.”
