Grimsby school set to brighten up town centre with flowers and posters in new project

A Grimsby primary school is set to help brighten up the town centre with decorative hanging baskets and posters designed by their students.

 

Littlecoates Primary Academy, on Elsenham Road, will work in collaboration with North East Lincolnshire Council and Grimsby in Bloom to deliver the Green Spaces grant programme with the aim of beautifying Victoria Street South.

 

The school’s gardening club will be helping to grow flowers to go in the baskets along the street in November and the arts club will produce designs for four metal signs to be installed at various entrances into the town centre.

 

Alongside this, there will also be a series of QR codes accompanying some of the hanging baskets, explaining who created the new, vibrant look of the street and the Council’s plans for regeneration across Grimsby.

 

The planters will be changed three times a year to help maintain sustainability and display a variety of plants and flowers. The project will be funded through the Green Spaces grant programme of the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government which aims to improve the quality of the town centre whilst reducing crime and Anti-Social Behaviour.

 

Littlecoates Primary Academy Headteacher, Nev Wilkinson, is delighted to be a part of the project. He said: “We’re always looking to join in with community projects wherever we can.

 

“This is a great way for the children to have some pride in the area and give something back to the community.

 

“I also think this will give them a chance to show friends and family what they’ve done as part after school clubs whilst giving them a sense of belonging.”

 

Councillor Ron Shepherd, Portfolio Holder for Safer and Stronger Communities, added: “I think this is an amazing way to improve the town centre.

 

“We are always looking to inspire the younger generation in North East Lincolnshire and I’m sure these students will create a beautiful new look to Victoria Street.

 

“However, this is just one aspect of what the Council are planning for Grimsby town centre. We are nearing completion of the Riverhead Centre and the redevelopment of Freshney Place is ongoing as we look to provide a new and vibrant Grimsby for residents and visitors to enjoy.”
