Members of North East Lincolnshire Council’s Cabinet recently took a trip to the NEWLINCS Energy from Waste plant to see what happens to your rubbish.

The Energy from Waste Plant is based at the Integrated Waste Management Facility in Stallingborough, the plant is used to turn household waste, placed in the green bin, into energy which can be used to power surrounding amenities.

The process

The Energy from Waste plant is a combined heat and power plant fuelled by municipal waste that is not recyclable, instead of being sent to a landfill site, the waste is thermally processed under controlled conditions, generating electricity and pressurised hot water.  Ash and ferrous scrap produced by the process is recycled. The plant operates for 8000 hours per year processing up to 56,000 tonnes of waste per annum.

Other waste

Recyclable materials and garden waste are also taken to the Integrated Waste Management Facility for bulking and shredding purposes before being transported onto recycling re-processors.

Items stored in the blue bin are recycled and made into newsprint and cardboard. Cans, glass and plastic go to Bespoke Recycling in Grimsby where they’re sorted and distributed across the UK to be made into other items.

Garden waste is shredded prior to transporting the material to a company in Riby where it is composted using the Windrow composting method.

Councillor Hudson, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Net Zero, said: “It’s always great to get more of an insight into how the borough’s waste is processed. Many people know that it goes into a bin wagon, but the part after that isn’t as well known.

“The work carried out by our waste services and NEWLINCS to ensure everything possible is recycled is invaluable to us achieving our Net Zero targets.

“We know there is still work to be done to reach this, but we will continue to work with our partners and residents of the borough as we strive to reach our goals.”
