Getting “In The Mood” Pays Off!

Lincoln BIG’s 1940s celebrations finished on a high note with the presentation of certificates and hearty congratulations to the winners of the best dressed couple, shop window and business’ staff, who all threw themselves into the spirit of the event.

There was a brilliant atmosphere in the Uphill area of Lincoln when hundreds of people turned out to soak-up the special ambience of this special event, and watch fabulous dance routines, listen to favourite wartime songs, visit antique and craft stalls and meet up with old friends.

Refusing to let high winds, which forced the scaling down of the event on Saturday, to dampen their spirits people turned out in force dressed for the occasion in tea dresses, jaunty hats, 1940-style suits, trilby hats and military attire, determined to have a good time.

The streets were bedecked with patriotic bunting, shops and cafes pulled out all the stops by encouraging their staff to dress 1940s style and windows were dressed in keeping with the event.

Competition Judge, Bailgate Independent Editor mingled with the crowds and finally best-dressed couple – Daphne and Pete Melbourne of Morton, near Gainsborough, who turned heads with their vintage outfits and who were presented with a certificate and bottle of fizz, by Amanda – who had also sponsored the wine!

Meanwhile, our other Judge, Stokes Tea & Coffee Business Growth and Marketing Manager Samantha Pover, put in plenty of legwork taking a close look at shops, cafes and restaurants, who had gone to town and decorated their premises 1940s style.

Samantha also had the job of deciding which staff teams had gone the extra mile and dressed-up especially for the weekend.

F P Watson Ltd came out on top in the hotly-contested Best Dressed Window competition, stopping visitors in their tracks with their superbly decorated window, which was still capturing plenty of admiring glances in the days after the event.

And there was lots of excitement at Bells Tea Rooms in Steep Hill, when owner Nicky Lockwood learned that her waiting team, who wore a selection of brightly-coloured tea dresses, had scooped the Best Dressed Staff award for their efforts.

The tea rooms also served teas in surroundings bedecked with bunting and flags and tables accessorised with 1940s-style newspapers and memorabilia.

The best dressed couple was given their certificate and bottle of wine during their visit.

But Lincoln BIG Chief Executive Sarah Loftus and judge Samantha Pover personally visited F P Watson and Bells Tea Shop to offer their congratulations and present their certificates.

F P Watson Ltd owner Mel Braithwaite said: “My assistant Angela Firmstone had a clear vision of what she wanted our shop window to look like, so we provided the props and she really went to town.

“I thought it was lovely, as an independent, to make an effort and it has really paid off.”

Bells Tea Shop owner Nicky Lockwood said: “1940s Weekend is our busiest and our waitresses dressed-up and we had bunting and flags and we put old newspapers and reproduction ration tickets on our tables.

“We are thrilled to have been recognised and rewarded with our certificate from Lincoln BIG.”

Lincoln BIG Chief Executive Sarah Loftus said: “Our 1940s Weekend is a real hit with local people and visitors alike, many travelling many miles to join us and snapping-up space in our hotels and guest houses.

“This is an event where everybody seems to enjoy spending time outside and soaking-up the unmissable ambience.  We always encourage our levy payers to get involved as much as possible and I am delighted with their efforts.”
