Over the past two years £5.7million of external funding has been secured to invest in the resort over the next three years, with a further £1m contributed by North East Lincolnshire council.
CoastNEL (a group of local people representing business, arts, culture, tourism and heritage) worked with the council to secure £3.8m from the government’s Coastal Communities Fund in 2017.
The aim of this fund is to help coastal communities to strengthen their appeal as places to live, work and visit.
This money is being used to regenerate and improve the town and broaden its appeal to visitors, with projects including:
- improved public spaces
- public art installations in the town’s historic streets and promenades
- support to local tourism businesses
- an extended events programme.
Since the funding was awarded, CoastNEL and the council have carried out a number of public consultation and engagement events and this has helped to shape the projects which will be delivered.
Work has now started on some of the highways and public space improvements and will be fully completed in December 2020.
The council was also awarded £1.9m in 2017 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to deliver a ‘Discover Cleethorpes Heritage’ Townscape Heritage programme, a five year regeneration scheme. The council is contributing a further £1m to the scheme.
The majority of these funds will be available as grants to building owners in the area to repair and reinstate original features to conserve and enhance the unique historic environment in Alexandra Road and Sea View Street.
These are exciting times for Cleethorpes, keep up-to-date on all the developments:
