Creative Boost for Resort Library

Delight as a three-year programme of cultural events and projects for Cleethorpes Library Albert Room receives financial support from the Arts Council.

An ambitious programme of creative arts has been awarded grant funding from the Arts Council, bringing a new chapter to the cultural offer at Cleethorpes Library Albert Room.

The £49,950 grant will enable Lincs Inspire’s Arts and Libraries team to develop a wide-ranging creative programme, covering a host of art forms including theatre, visual arts and spoken word.

David Power, Principal Arts Officer for Lincs Inspire, said:

“We are delighted with this award as it enables us to build substantially on the excellent creative work at Cleethorpes Library in recent years.

“The grant funding will see us work with local and national theatre companies to bring live drama performances to this informal space, along with showcasing the talent of local and regional poets through open mic evenings.

“The flexible space of the library’s Albert Room means it can also be transformed into an exhibition room and the programme will include an opportunity for artists, including children and young people to showcase their talents.

“Importantly, the three-year funding timeframe gives us the opportunity to make this work sustainable, meaning we will be able to leave a legacy of this space being used for artistic purposes for years to come.”

Derek O’Connell, Lincs Inspire Head of Libraries, said:

“It is so gratifying that we have won the confidence of funders for the work at Cleethorpes Library.

“Public libraries are more commonly being seen as welcoming places where children and adults can immerse themselves in every form of art and, over recent years, we have been working hard to develop this within our libraries to complement the traditional offering.”

A Postcode Local grant in 2018 enabled Lincs Inspire to transform the library’s garden, an arts and heritage shop opened last year within the library, and the Albert Room has been used for open mic nights, touring theatrical performances and artistic workshops over the last four years.

Derek added:

“This significant new award for the arts in the Albert Room will help to build on these foundations. The new programme will also involve local schools who will be invited to produce artwork for display in the Inspire Garden and talks by local, regional, and national authors will be arranged – the first being a talk on Thursday, July 28, by authors Lucy Diamond and Milly Johnson.”

Opportunities will be available for local artists at all levels as well as a generous amount of regional and national artists coming to Cleethorpes to share their talents. Organisations involved include Breakwater Theatre, Lowercase, Inn Crowd, New Perspectives, Slung Low and Urban Projections, with many more still to be announced.
