Barrie Rutter OBE and Rosie Millard OBE to be appointed as Patrons of Hull Truck Theatre

This January, Hull Truck Theatre announce the appointment of Rosie Millard OBE and Barrie Rutter OBE as inaugural members of a new Patrons scheme.

Rosie Millard OBE is CEO of Children and the Arts, a charity which works across the UK to engage children and young people with great art. She is a former Arts Correspondent of the BBC and a national journalist and broadcaster. She is Chair of BBC Children in Need and has a very special relationship with Hull. She is a Hull University alumna and has an Honorary Doctorate from the University. She was Chair of Hull UK City of Culture 2017, during which time she worked closely with Hull Truck Theatre. She appeared on stage in James Graham’s The Culture, an experience which she said was one of the most nerve-wracking moments of the entire year for her.

Barrie Rutter OBE is a Hull-born Actor and Director and winner of numerous awards, including the Creative Briton Award 2000. He is the founder and previous Artistic Director of Northern Broadsides theatre company based in West Yorkshire. Barrie has collaborated with Hull Truck Theatre on numerous occasions that include the acclaimed production of Richard III as part of Hull UK City of Culture 2017 and Hull Truck Theatre’s current production of Jack Lear.

The two Patrons will support the theatre’s charitable objectives and its vision to be a pioneering theatre with a unique Northern voice. They will be advocates of the organisation and promote its profile on a regional and national level, supporting the marketing and fundraising that sustain its position as a company that is locally rooted, global in outlook and which inspires artists, audiences and communities to reach their greatest potential.

Ruth Puckering, Interim Executive Director at Hull Truck Theatre, said:

“We’re delighted to be announcing Rosie and Barrie as our official Patrons. They both already have a strong relationship with the theatre and affinity with Hull and, as supportive and recognised friends, they seemed the perfect fit. We really look forward to working with them to help raise the national profile of Hull Truck Theatre.”

Alan Dix, Chair of the Board of Hull Truck Theatre, said:

“We are very pleased to welcome Rosie and Barrie as Hull Truck Theatre’s new Patrons. Both have supported the company over many years and will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to its creative journey. As high-profile champions and advocates of the company they will ensure that Hull Truck Theatre’s reputation continues to grow and thrive.”

Rosie Millard OBE said:

“Hull Truck is an unmissable creative force in British theatre. When I arrived in Hull as a student at the University it was abundantly obvious that here was one of the country’s most thrilling and engaging theatre companies which continues to deliver the enviable achievement of wielding a national voice while staying fiercely local. Truck’s place at the heart of the UK City of Culture was one of the highlights of the entire year and I am madly proud to stand alongside the force of nature that is Barrie Rutter as one of its patrons.”

Barrie Rutter OBE said:

“When I was approached about becoming a Patron of Hull Truck Theatre, I responded with an immediate and firm ‘yes’. I’m ready to help and eager to encourage in any way I can. Count me in.”
