A young Lincolnshire primary school pupil has won a competition, held by Wolds View, a Wyevale Garden Centre, to design a flag which best represents the centre’s new name.
Chloe Dobbs, a pupil at Kirkby on Bain Primary School, was declared the winner of the flag competition today (Monday 25th July) at a special unveiling ceremony and morning tea attended by her family and friends, Mayor Bill Aron, garden centre manager Ken Dawson and the Wolds View garden centre staff.
Former Mayor, Councillor Angela Birchall, and Ken Dawson, Garden Centre Manager, chose the winning flag, from local primary school entrees, as the design which best represented the garden centre’s name. Chloe’s interpretation of ‘Wolds View’, a name describing the scenic view of the Wolds from the centre’s well-known plant area, incorporates “the hills of the Wolds and the forest, river and sunset.”
Having designed the new flag, the young artist can now see her creation brought to life in the form of a flag which flies outside the entrance to Wolds View, alongside the centre’s three existing flags.
As well as seeing her winning design brought to life as a flag, she was also awarded a £500 voucher to spend at the garden centre on plants or equipment for her school garden.
The other winning entries were by Ellie aged 6, from Horncastle Primary School, who was awarded second prize, and Jacob aged 5, from Kirkby on Bain Primary School, who was awarded third prize.
The competition runner-ups didn’t go empty-handed, with the second prize winner being awarded a £250 Wyevale Garden Centres voucher for her school, and the third prize winner receiving potted sunflower seeds for his school classroom.
Ken Dawson, Garden Centre Manager, said:
The competition was lots of fun and a great way to engage the imagination and creativity of Lincolnshire’s youngsters. Chloe’s design brilliantly captures the centre’s new name and is a fantastic way to celebrate the local community.
Mr Simon Morley, Kirkby on Bain Primary School Headmaster, says: “Everyone at the school is very proud of Chloe’s achievement and we’re thrilled to see her winning design brought to life.
Horncastle’s Mayor and County Councillor Bill Aron, said:
Chloe’s flag is a wonderful tribute to the Lincolnshire Wolds and Wolds View, a Wyevale Garden Centre. I know that everyone in the community, including her family and school are very proud. I am delighted to be here as the flag is officially raised.
