Council raises a flag for Commonwealth Day

North Lincolnshire Council is holding a ceremony to show its support for Commonwealth Day on Monday 14 March where the Mayor of North Lincolnshire, Cllr Helen Rowson will raise the Commonwealth flag at 10am.

The Mayor will read a special Commonwealth affirmation at the ceremony before she raises the flag at the Civic Centre, Ashby Road, Scunthorpe.

More and more people are taking part in Commonwealth Day with over 850 flags being raised at the same time on the same day.

Now in its third year, more local councils, civic dignitaries, community groups and charities throughout the British Isles, UK Overseas Countries and Commonwealth Countries will take part than ever before.

Commonwealth Day is an opportunity to promote understanding on global issues, international cooperation and the work of the Commonwealth organisations that aims to improve the lives of its people.

Cllr Helen Rowson, Mayor of North Lincolnshire, said:

I am honoured to be taking part in the Commonwealth Day ceremony by raising the flag in North Lincolnshire to mark the day. As well as help raise awareness of global issues and bring people of all diversities together, which is extremely important. Only in its third year, Commonwealth Day is already having a big impact across the country.

This year’s theme is ‘An Inclusive Commonwealth’ which encourages people to join in the celebrations throughout our communities. Everyone is welcome to be a part of the ceremony in Scunthorpe.

The aim of Commonwealth Day is to celebrate unity, diversity and linkages of the modern Commonwealth and foster greater understanding of the Commonwealth’s achievements and role.
