Record demand for locally produced raw milk at the award winning Welbeck Farm Shop, near Worksop, means customers are already buying more than 200 litres per week.
The launch of unpasteurised, or raw milk, in December 2015 has far exceeded expectations with the shop often selling out at weekends. With more customers keen to get a taste of raw fresh milk, the farm shop believes that it could double sales to over 400 litres in the next year.
Milk on sale from the vending machine at Welbeck Farm Shop is less than 24 hours old. Holstein cows at the Welbeck Dairy, in Collingwood, just 1.5 miles away are milked each morning and the milk is cooled within minutes, without contact with the air, and immediately taken to the shop. Typically, pasteurised milk sold in supermarkets and elsewhere will be around two weeks old by the time it is drunk by the customer.
Oliver Stubbins, Welbeck Farm Shop Manager, said:
Raw milk is a beautiful, high quality product which is a natural fit to the product lines available at the farm shop.
Our customers love Stichelton cheese, which is also made here at Welbeck using the very same raw milk, so the next step was to make our milk available to the public. We’re overwhelmed with its popularity and I can see us selling 400 litres a week by next year.
Raw milk on sale at Welbeck Farm Shop is priced at £1 per litre, which is paid in full to the farmer ensuring a fair sale. Currently, farmers receive up to 24p a litre from supermarkets for their milk.
