As part of a programme of events focusing on Design, the National Trust at Belton House is hosting a number of talks called Meet the Experts.
The first takes place on Tuesday 18 March and is somewhat unexpectedly entitled ‘Getting Plastered!’
“No alcohol is involved in this event, I’m afraid” says House & Collections Manager Catherine Granger, “Instead we’ll look at the development of decorative plasterwork in historic buildings up to the late 17th century, when Belton House was built”
Dr David Bostwick, Historic Buildings Consultant, will present this colourful talk which includes a look inside the house to see some of the beautiful examples of plasterwork in Belton’s collection. This intricate and ornate work required skilled craftsmanship and was certainly designed to impress.
“We have a whole series of ‘Meet the Expert’ talks and tours this year”, continues Catherine; “featuring fascinating aspects of Belton’s design history. People will have the opportunity to meet knowledgeable experts in their field, to share their enthusiasm for the treasures in Belton’s collection, and to look at the inspiration for design. We’ll also be taking a closer look at the changing faces of garden design, the significance of much-loved landscape features, and some of the challenges we face in caring for them today.”
