It is the general view that gardens die every winter, and therefore there is nothing to do in them.
This simply isn’t true. The garden simply goes to sleep, but there are several activities that you can do over the winter to ensure that your garden is always a more beautiful and productive addition to your life.
Winter is the perfect time to reflect on the past year’s garden; – the highs, and the lows! Now is a good time to perhaps start a garden journal, noting down the past successes and failures of the year so far. You could include a current map of what you have planted and where, as in the bare ground of the winter garden it will help you remember the location of perennials and bulbs. Write about your garden everyday during the winter months, as this is a good way to plan for next year. You could include plans to expand some areas, – maybe adding a cold frame, a greenhouse, or another seating paved area. With some plans in mind you can always wander around the garden centre and begin to cost out what is required. This will avoid budgeting errors, so that you will have plenty of time to increase the spend or reign in as required. A planned garden is more likely to come to fruition than ad hoc ideas.
Performing essential maintenance tasks now will increase the chance of a trouble free Winter.
Christmas is just around the corner, but even in December there are always jobs that tempt most gardeners outdoors. The short days can still be used to good advantage, to get ahead in the garden. Performing essential maintenance tasks now will increase the chance of a trouble free Winter, as frost is the gardeners’ number one enemy. Check on any tender plants that are going to require a little tlc through the next few months. If you are not sure what to do with them the friendly staff at the garden centre will always be only too happy to advise you.
