Wakefield Music Services kicked off its events calendar for 2017 on Wednesday 1st February with its annual ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition in partnership with West Yorkshire Police, Wakefield College and Music for Youth. This year’s event was also sponsored by SUBWAY® with over fifty performers given vouchers to redeem a free Sub in stores across the region.

The competition saw bands from St Thomas a Becket Secondary School, The Kings School Pontefract, Kettlethorpe High School, Airedale Academy, Crofton Academy, Pontefract New College and Greenhead College battle for the converted title. The Waves from Kettlethorpe High School wowed the judges and took home the prize for Best Overall Band and The 789s from Airedale Academy ran away with the Best Original Song award. Both bands won a prestigious trophy and a recording session in a local music studio.

Jamie Davies, Director of Operations at Made to Order Limited, that own a number of stores in Wakefield, said:

As a local business we’re delighted to be able to give something back to the community through the ‘Battle Of The Bands’ contest. Congratulations to all the performers that took part, it’s a fantastic competition that encourages the young musical talent of Wakefield to showcase their expertise and we’re proud to be able to support them.

Whilst the SUBWAY® brand is the world’s largest specialist sandwich provider with over 2,300 stores across the UK and Ireland, each of its stores is owned by local business people and families, who live in the local community in which they operate.
