Batemans completes extensive investment programme and prepares for next stage in 2016

Alongside the acquisition of The Olive Bar & Grill, Doncaster, and The Game Bird in Beverley , Batemans also purchased The Ladybower Inn as part of its strategy to buy larger pubs with good food, drink and accommodation income streams. This site will run under a Pub Operators Agreement (POA) style contract (a cross between a managed and tenanted pub which sees the operator take a percentage of turnover). Located in the Peak District, The Ladybower enjoys high tourist footfall thanks to its scenic surroundings, and Batemans anticipates an annual barrelage of up to 400.

Properties that have been invested in throughout 2015 included The Britannia, located in Boston, Lincolnshire; a renowned heritage site which has the privilege of being the most photographed pub in the country. Batemans made a significant £50,000 investment into the site, giving it a complete overhaul to ensure this famous pub regains its reputation as the heart of the community. In addition, the Woolpack in Wainfleet received an extensive £150,000 refurbishment, the largest made by the company in its history, while The King’s Head in Bonsall received a considerable investment to create a 30 seater restaurant, with the objective of boosting food revenues.

Batemans also appreciates the importance of developing its team members, and as such has been working closely with its publicans over the last twelve months to ensure they receive all the training they need. This has included Rob and Mel Wild, the new landlords of The Red Lion in Mumby, who have undergone Batemans’ extensive courses including ‘Batemans Cellar Management – Quality Counts’ and the two day ‘Running a Pub Successfully’ courses. Batemans offers these, alongside BIIAB and CIEH qualifications, to all of its landlords.

This investment into people and pubs has formed a key part of the brewer’s ongoing strategy and the next stage of this, for 2016, has begun with the purchase of the Fairways Inn in Sheffield, as Batemans looks to attract new talent to work in the many vibrant community pubs that make up the brewer’s 60 plus portfolio. Acquisitions will also continue to be a priority over the next twelve months, with Batemans keen to purchase a number of new sites.

We have a much defined strategy in place for Batemans, to secure its future and ongoing success and key to this is investment – both into our people, and our estate. We are searching for talent: be they tenants, POA operators; managers; assistant managers and trainees. We want to have the best people working in our sites, and want the pubs they run to be of the highest standard. This investment programme will continue this year, as we look to acquire other sites and increase the number running under POA agreements and management.
