Educating and entertaining children at the horse racing has led to Market Rasen Racecourse winning a national award.
The BIG Jigsaw Challenge, an interactive team game held during a family fun day in August, was created to help children learn more about horse racing and the welfare of racehorses, while having the chance to win prizes.
Groups of youngsters hunted for clues to discover the jigsaw pieces which each represented a part of the day for racehorses and jockeys – for example the parade ring and the winners’ enclosure.
On answering the clues, groups of children were given tours of the relevant areas of the racecourse to learn more – and so they had a chance to go ‘behind the scenes’.
So popular was the game that it will be repeated at four race meetings at Market Rasen in 2016 – and it will be taken up by other racecourses too.
As a result, the Racecourse Association – the trade body of Britain’s racecourses – and the sport’s promotional arm, Great British Racing, chose the Lincolnshire venue as the winner in the ‘All About The Horse’ category of its annual Showcase Awards which were held at Ascot Racecourse. The awards celebrate excellence and innovation among Britain’s racecourses.
In another category – the ‘Owners’ Experience’ award – nominations were made by members of the Racehorse Owners Association, among the most important customers in the sport. Market Rasen Racecourse was one of finalists for its hospitality for racehorse owners, including care and welfare of their horses.
Nadia Gollings, General Manager, Market Rasen Racecourse, said:
We are thrilled that Market Rasen Racecourse has won for the first time at the Showcase Awards. This is a great achievement and recognition of the hard work that the team at the racecourse has put in this year. It was very pleasing that this has been recognised by our peers.
